Handmade Monday 101

Welcome to Handmade Monday!

It's been a busy week on this blog!  If you missed all the giveaways to celebrate 100 Handmade Mondays, you can find them by scrolling down while you're on the home page.  There's a giveaway a day for five days - and it's not too late to enter them all!

The lucky winners will be picked on Thursday and Friday, so look out for an announcement.  I'll try to email each winner, but do pop back here in case I can't contact you.  I'd like to say a very big thank you to all the entrants - I wish I had enough prizes for all of you!

the strawberry fabric gets the chop

Apart from giveaways this week, I've been busy turning my lovely strawberry fabric from Abakhan into a picnic blanket carrier for Craftseller magazine - the kind of thing that wraps around a rolled blanket and has a handle to go over your shoulder. I told you I was thinking summer picnics!  Picnic weather would make a lovely change from snow, slush, sleet and hailstones right now.  To be fair, the sun has made a very welcome appearance this afternoon in Cheshire, but it's quite a long way from picnic weather ... the snow has melted and the garden is flooded, yet again!  I'm just amazed we still have grass.

If you want to make your own picnic blanket holder, you'll find the instructions in Craftseller issue 23 if all goes to plan.  Meanwhile, I'll be writing up the pattern and instructions this week!

I couldn't resist adding a felt strawberry on the pocket!
It doubles up as a fastener, with Velcro on the back.

What have you been up to?  Leave your blog link below, then put your feet up to enjoy some blog surfing from the cosiness of your own home - the best place to be on a winter evening!

Win a Personalised Marketing Assessment for your Small Business

This giveaway is a really exciting one for anyone running a small handmade business!

Mike Carthew  and Anna Ward, authors of Commercial Creatives and owners of Two Red Trees are offering the following to someone running a creative business:

a personalised assessment of one lucky winner's work, marketing and online strategy.  It will cover customer profiling, copywriting, SEO, photography, etc., and will lead to a marketing strategy for the winner.

I think this prize is incredibly valuable, as well as generous - anyone running a small business is eligible to enter.  Mike and Anna would also like to feature the lucky winner as a case study on their website - if you win you can discuss this further with them, but as far as I can see, it's a super opportunity for some extra publicity!

Mike and Anna's book (win a copy here)

To enter, simply leave a comment telling me a little bit about your business.

The lucky winner will be picked at random on Friday 1st February at 12 noon UK time, and announced soon afterwards on this blog.

Good luck!  If you missed Tuesday's giveaway (vouchers for Abakhan Fabrics) you can enter it here.  If you missed Monday's giveaway (Kindle or PDF copies of Mike and Anna's new book, Commercial Creatives) you can enter here.  And the giveaway for Magix photo-editing software is here.

Pop back tomorrow for yet another giveaway.  Are you exhausted yet? I am!!

Photo-Editing Software Giveaway

I'm really excited about this giveaway - it's for photo-editing software from Magix...

You can find out more about it by clicking the link, but I can tell you now: it looks pretty impressive.  I was sent a copy to review, and I was a little worried it might go over my head.  I'm not the most technical of people. I think perhaps I'm much better with a very low-tech pencil and paper!

I needn't have worried.  The learning curve is quite a gentle one (although I'll admit I'm still on the nursery slopes!) and there are hints on the page as you are using it - they're quite subtle and not at all intrusive, so look out for them as you may miss them to begin with.

If you do find the learning curve a little bit too steep for your liking, you'll find tutorials in the Magix online magazine as well as their You-Tube channel, so there's no need to feel like something is confusing or insurmountable. There's even a forum to ask questions (you'll discover it during the download process). As a former teacher, I really like the fact they've made allowances for different learning styles and preferences in the presentation of their information.

magix magazine

Photo editing software is useful for pretty much anyone, but especially useful if you sell your crafts online: we all know how important a good image is when buying and selling... it's what your customer uses when deciding to buy.  You can use Magix photo-editing software for videos, too - which are a great way of increasing views to your blog or website (Google does love a good video!).

Magix also run competitions on their Facebook page so it might be worth popping over there for a like!

If you'd like to win a copy of this software, please leave me a comment on this post telling me why you'd like to win it - that's all you need to do!

However, you can get an extra entry into the draw for each of the following that you do (doesn't have to be all of them, but you get an entry for each one you do):

  • tweet about this competition using the hashtag #handmadeharbour (all one word) and a link to this post
  • share on Facebook that you've entered this competition, with a link to this post
  • Follow this blog on Google Friend Connect
  • Blog about this competition, including a link to this post

Winners will be picked on Friday 1st February at 12 noon, UK time  and will be announced shortly afterwards.  Thanks for entering and good luck!

The lucky winner will be sent a download link and activation code by email, so it's open to anyone, anywhere in the world (there's no physical product, it's all done digitally).

This giveaway is number three of five - all happening this week!  Click the home button to scroll through the other blog posts.

Fabrics and Craft Supplies Giveaway!

Oh wow...I'm getting so excited by all these giveaways this week!  I'm hosting a different giveaway every day this week, Monday to Friday, so do pop back for more!

Today, I'm pleased to be teaming up with Abakhan who are offering 3 vouchers, effectively tripling your chances of winning!  Each voucher is for £20 and if you are one of the lucky winners you can spend your voucher on whatever you like from their website.

strawberry fabric from Abakhan
I have plans for this fabric ...
it might be cold right now but I'm thinking summer picnics!

Abakhan have long been one of my favourite fabric shops (I love that I'm close enough for a special trip every so often to their North Wales branch) but they don't just sell fabrics.  There's a whole lot in the way of craft supplies too: if knitting, felting, crochet, beading or jewellery-making just happens to be your thing, you'll probably find something you love!

All you need to do to be in with a chance of winning a £20 voucher is this:

Leave a comment on this post, telling me what you would make if you won.

It's that simple!

What are you waiting for?  Pop over to Abakhan for a browse and some inspiration, and pop back here to leave your comment.

Winners will be drawn Thursday 31st January at noon UK time and announced on this blog soon afterwards.

This particular giveaway is only open to people in the UK.  Check here for yesterday's giveaway if you missed it - and don't forget to pop back tomorrow for another!

Commercial Creatives: Book Giveaway!

Today we have not one but five books to give away (well, five copies of the same book)...

Commercial Creatives on the Kindle Fire

Commercial Creatives is a new book, aimed at anyone who wants to sell their art, craft or design work.  I was sent a copy on Kindle to review - currently, I'm only part way through it.  Up to now, I can tell you it is well worth reading.  You'll learn about different ways to sell, what a difference photography makes (and how to make the most of that difference, whatever your budget or lack thereof!) and why your choice of wording matters.

You'll learn a lot more, of course, but I really need to read the rest of the book to share that with you (I'll do a post all about it once I've finished reading!).

I'm still reading!

It's a book written by people who live and breathe creative selling - and it's clear they know their stuff - but it is also packed with interviews with people who add such a lot to the mix.  There's a really useful section on UK tax laws, but I think the rest of the book will be useful for anyone pretty much anywhere in the world.  Don't take my word for it - read some free chapters to get a feel of the book!

Mike and Anna, the authors, have kindly offered five copies of their book to me to give away.  The free books are in digital format, although you can buy it in paperback on Amazon.  You can also buy it for your Kindle (these links are to the UK Amazon pages).

The US Amazon page is here.

This giveaway is open to anyone, worldwide.  The prize is in digital format, so you'll be sent a link to download.  You can choose to have it in PDF or Kindle format.

To be in with a chance of winning a copy, simply leave a message on this post, telling me why you'd like to win.

Pop back tomorrow for another giveaway! There are five giveaways in total this week.

Handmade Monday 100

Yippeee! Welcome to the 100th Handmade Monday post!

I feel I should be letting fireworks off - or at least offering you cake.  Because doing either probably wouldn't work very well online, I'm going to be hosting some very special giveaways.

cake, anyone?

Of course it's a celebration, but it's also very much about saying a very big THANK YOU to each and every person who has taken part in Handmade Monday, as well as all those who take a passing interest - those people who pop by and squeeze in the time to peruse your lovely blogs, a bit like a lucky dip!

Handmade Monday would never have worked without you all, and most especially, the "regulars" (you know who you are!).  It has a real community feel and people have said some lovely things about it ... it's like an online coffee morning, it's the friendliest linky party out there ... that sort of thing.  Community is a big part of making and selling crafts, and the lovely comments just reflect the very lovely people who take part.  Thank you all.

So, what can you expect this coming week from the giveaways?

There will be a different giveaway every day for five days, starting tomorrow, Monday.  I'll be teaming up with a variety of businesses and creative people to give away books, photo-editing/design software, vouchers for fabric/craft supplies and a very special one-to-one assessment of one lucky person's small business's marketing activity - leading to a personalised marketing strategy covering lots of areas for one lucky winner!  This is incredibly generous - do pop back for more information later in the week.

I'll leave you with a photo of the latest Sewing World magazine...

and my owl pincushion/thread catcher...

I made this owl with fabric from Guthrie & Ghani - do pop by for a look at their range.  While you're there, check out their blog for the ongoing story of the amazing renovation of an old building into their shop premises and home - I love reading about how this is progressing! It feels a bit like one of those renovation programmes but in blog format.

Do pop back every day this week to see what you could win!

Get the Most from Google Analytics

This post is brought to you by Fiona Pullen of The Sewing Directory

Google Analytics is a brilliant free tool which most web site/blog owners use to keep an eye on their traffic; however you can get a lot more information than that from it.  There is a wealth of information that can be garnered from Google Analytics which can really help you plan your SEO and your site content.  So I’m going to show you some of the useful information you can get, and how you can use it to your advantage.   This is just an introduction to the basics, for more information you can download Google’s own guide here.

Daily traffic

When you first load your analytics and click on your website name the first thing you get shown is your traffic for the last month in graph format with like the image below,  minus the red dots which I’ve added in to illustrate a point below.

If you site is anything like mine you will notice that there are peaks and troughs in these stats, most sites don’t get a steady amount of traffic every single day of the week.  The days I have marked in red are my low points, every single week without fail my traffic dips on a Saturday.  It then picks up again start of the week and tends to peak around Tuesday.

What can you learn from that?

When you have a day of lower traffic you can either try to figure out why and see if there is any way you can increase the traffic on that day (putting a special offer on, a competition, a news post etc).  Or you can accept that those days are going to have less visitors and try not to put your best content, your offers etc on those days as less people will be seeing them.
In my case I presume that traffic is lower on a Saturday because it is the weekend and people are out enjoying themselves rather than sitting in at a computer.  So I don’t fight against it, I accept there will be a dip and do not put any of my prime content new on site at the weekend.  Instead I save the most important things for the start of the week when I know I have an extra couple of hundred people looking at the site.

Traffic Sources

If you click traffic sources on the left hand side of the page and then click overview you are in the section that shows you how people are coming to your site.  Be it from adverts, mentions on other blogs/sites, Google and other search engines or social media.   This information is useful to know so you can see if any online adverts you have are worth the money, whether you SEO is working well for you and to see who is talking about you.

Let’s start by having a look at the overview page above.  The pie chart to the left gives you a break down as to how much of your traffic has come from search engines, how much has been referred from other sites (this includes your Facebook and Twitter pages) and how many people went direct to your site in the last month.   If you’ve recently handed out a lot of flyers at a craft show for instance you may see that your direct traffic will be quite high.  If you’ve been mentioned on several blogs your referral traffic will probably be high.  I’ve been working a lot on my SEO (search engine optimisation) so my search traffic is quite high.

The keyword list to the right is the terms that people have been putting into search engines which lead them to your site.  This is useful for SEO purposes to see whether you are ranking well for the terms you want people to be finding you for.

If you click on the word ‘source’ under Referral Traffic you will get a list of blogs and sites who have been sending traffic your way.  It will give you the name of the site, the amount of people who have clicked through to your site from their site and what percentage of your overall site traffic came from that site.

If you click on ‘Landing Page’ under the direct traffic heading you will see which page of the site people landed on when visiting your site (ie. The first page they visited).   Where it says / that means your homepage, this is most commonly the top page on the list.

On all of these lists it starts by showing you the top 10 but if you click ‘view full report’ on the bottom right it will bring up several more pages for you to look through.

What can I learn from this?

It’s very useful to see where your traffic is coming from so you can assess the effectiveness of your adverts, any guest posts you have done, your social media campaigns and your SEO.  Also you may find mentions of your company that you didn’t know about.

The landing page stats help you see what pages of your site are most popular.  It is worth reviewing those pages to work out why they are so popular, and keep them regularly updated so they continue to be popular.

Content

Another really important section of Google analytics is the content section, it’s in the menu on the left of the page.  Click content, and then overview to load a summary.  The graph at the top shows you the number of page views you’ve had each day.  Most site visitors will look at more than one page so this number will be higher than your visitor’s figure.  The stats underneath tell you the average time each visitor spent per page, and the bounce rate.  Bouncing means a visitor only looked at one page of your site and then left, rather than looking around through several pages.

Your goal is to keep people on your site, so that they look at your content/ buy your products/engage your services/click on lots of your ads or whatever the overall purpose of your site is.  So ideally you want a high page view figure, to show people are looking through your site, combined with a low bounce rate.  This means you are engaging your site visitors and keeping them on your site.

Further down on the page you will see a top 10 list of your most popular pages.  Click the option underneath this which says ‘view full report’.   This will load a page which looks like this (excluding the yellow):

This gives you more information about each page, how many page views it had, how long people spent on that page on average, how many visitors went straight to that page on visiting your site (entrances) and how many people looked at that page only (bounce rate) and how many people left your site from that page (exit rate).

You can click the arrows on the bottom right to skip to other pages; you can also type a page number in the ‘go to’ box.  For instance if I wanted to see the least viewed pages on my site I would type in 2398 in the go to box to take me to my least popular page.

Now the yellow box I have highlighted at the top of the page can be used to locate a particular page (or pages) of your site.  So if you want to see how many views a new product is getting type part of that page URL in that box or you can type in a keyword like ‘bag’.  Do bear in mind it will bring up every page that mentions the word you type in, if you want to type the exact link don’t include the domain just the page title after.

EG. If I want the stats for my page http://www.thesewingdirectory.co.uk/sewing-courses/ I would just type Sewing-courses into the search box to bring the page up.  If I typed in just sewing as a keyword I would bring up over 200 pages.

What can I learn from this?

You can see which of your pages are getting a lot of traffic and which ones aren’t.  You may want to compare the most and least popular pages to see if you can identify what makes some pages rank better than others.   The pages which have a high entrance rate are normally ones getting a lot of search engine traffic, they are showing up high in search results and people are clicking straight through to that page.   It could also mean that lots of other sites are linking directly to that page.  Also by looking at the content which gets the most traffic it will help you indentify what your site visitors like so you know where to concentrate your efforts in the future.

What if I want to look at more than one week?

One other useful thing to know is how to change the date period of the data you are viewing so you can check the stats for the last quarter, or last year instead of just the last month.  You can also to compare stats from one period to another.

On the top right hand corner of the screen you will see a date period with an arrow to the right of it.  Click on that arrow and it will allow you to change the date period, either by selecting it on a calendar of by typing the dates in.

There is also a little tick box under the date (which I’ve circled in red) that will allow you to compare the dates you have selected to a previous period.  You can then click to other sections of your stats (ie. View the content or the traffic sources) and it will continue to show the comparison between the 2 date periods you’ve selected.  It will also tell you how much the figures have changed between those dates such as in the example below.

Handmade Monday 99

Welcome to Handmade Monday - find out more by clicking the link.

I blogged a while ago about this chalkboard...

you may remember the little felt teapot, which works as a mini chalk and duster holder...

It's now featured as a project in the February issue of Craftseller magazine, which is due in the shops in a few days (subscribers should already have their copy).

It's made from an old wooden picture frame, updated with a lick or two of paint (and the teapot, of course).  The chalk board part is just the old backing board reused.  I love a good upcycled project, don't you?

I have another frame ready to recycle, extra large this time, rescued from who knows where by someone who just knew I'd use it.  I think I may do something similar with that one.

You may have noticed it's the 99th Handmade Monday.  Enjoy this week's links - of course! - but do pop back next week for some celebratory giveaways!  We can't let our 100th go by unmarked, although I'm not expecting a telegram from the Queen just yet...

Kitchen Table Talent & Pop-up Market

If you read the UK Country Living magazine, you may be aware of their Kitchen Table Talent awards, which has turned into an annual event in the magazine.  It seems they've taken the idea a step further...

The Country Living fair is quite a prestigious event, and usually costs quite a lot to exhibit at.  However, they are offering spaces on their pop-up market, especially designed for new entrepreneurs - for free.  It's part of promoting kitchen table talent - those people who sew, paint, sculpt, crochet, knit - and otherwise make wonderful things, maybe already starting to turn them into a little business.

If you are interested in applying for a space at the market, you can find out more on the Country Living website.  Your craft mustn't be your main source of income, you can't have been featured in national media and you can't have exhibited at Country Living previously.  They're not accepting food, drink or beauty products and you must have a physical product to sell.

It's an amazing opportunity and very generous - and I'd love to hear about anyone who takes them up on the offer.

Learning to Sew

If you've followed this blog for any length of time, you'll know that I am teaching my 10-year-old granddaughter to sew.  She's a really enthusiastic student (I hope that enthusiasm translates to school subjects too!) but we've had problems fitting "lessons" into a schedule - especially with Christmas being so busy.  Still, all that's over for another year!

Keira can sew in a reasonably straight line using my machine and has made a few things already - she is justifiably quite proud of her makes.  We're moving onto bags (at her request) and this is where Abakhan comes in.  They have a huge range of fabrics, so...

I've ordered this gorgeous retro turquoise fabric which was kind of my starting point.  Then I noticed this cute butterfly fabric picked up some of the same colours:

and the lilac gingham might tie it all together. Pretty much everything is reduced at the moment, too!

A metre each of all this all comes in - even with interfacing - at under £15.  I expect we'll each get a lined tote bag from it, and even accounting for internal and external pockets, there will be fabric left over for other projects (purses, key rings, phone pouches, maybe?).  It's all a little bit girlier than my usual style, but I suspect it's exactly the right level of girliness for Keira!

I must admit, the fabrics all feel very summery and I think that working on something like this when the days are short and cold gives you that feeling of looking forward to a lovely summer (even if the reality can be a bit of a wet let-down here in the UK!).

This is part of Abakhan's monthly £15 challenge, and Abakhan are kindly supplying this fabric.  I can't wait - fortunately their delivery times are pretty quick.

Create Your 2013 Action Plan

If you are making a plan for 2013, you will have targets - won't you?

If you'd like to create an action plan for the whole year, with weekly targets, feel free to download mine - I promise there are no strings.  It's nothing fancy - basically it's just a table, with weekly dates, and room for three targets a week.  But it might just change the way you plan your time.

There is a reason the last four weeks aren't given a date like the rest of the year, and anyone who's been selling craft/gift items online for any length of time will know that you just don't set targets for December - the customer orders in those weeks can sometimes control your every move!

It's a free PDF download, so feel free to print as many as you like and scribble all over them.  I hope it helps organise your thoughts and plans for 2013.

I'm talking about setting targets over on the Craftseller blog this week.  Watch out for it.

Handmade Monday 98

Welcome to the first Handmade Monday of 2013 - and a very Happy New Year to you!  I hope 2013 is everything you hope for and more.

This week has been a muddle of happy crafting mess...

Yes, there are chopped-up Tesco juice cartons on my cutting mat!

Here's a confession: I've been drinking lots of juice from cartons just so I could use the cartons in a project for Craftseller magazine.

Yes, I bought them specially. I even ended up decanting apple juice into bottles so I could use the cartons because we just couldn't drink it fast enough!

I know the whole point of - ahem - upcycling these tetra-paks is to use something that would otherwise be thrown away.  But hey, I had a deadline to meet and that will have to serve as my excuse!

The theme seems to be birds this week.  The juice cartons are being transformed into bird feeders (which I thought was a completely unique idea of mine - until I googled it!) and I'm making a plaque with birds on too (also for Craftseller)...

I think maybe I'm still on the tail end of Hurricane Christmas (it certainly felt like a mad whirlwind - hand making gifts to order  has its drawbacks at this time of year, and people still carry on ordering after the big day).  But I'm sure it will all slow down soon enough.

Being so busy means I haven't yet made plans for the new year.  There is something new and quite exciting happening though!  I've been asked to be a regular contributor to a new blog from Craftseller magazine.  The party has started without me over at Craft-seller's new website, but I'm sure I'll catch up soon (I warned them I'd be arriving late: I knew that hurricane was on its way!).  The website is already looking really good, with lots of input from lots of different people.  Be sure to check it out!

Please leave your link below and I will pop by as soon as I can.  We have visitors staying at the moment, some of whom are quite small and I don't see as often as I would like ... so forgive me if I get distracted!
