Do You Sell Your Handmade Cards?

If you sell your handmade cards, you may be interested in a new directory being put together over at Kate Harper's Greeting Card Designer blog.

There are some restrictions: in particular, your cards have to be handmade in some way (not just printed).  But it sounds like a fabulous way to get a little extra free publicity!

If you've not come across Kate's blog before, you may want to set aside an afternoon (or several).  There's lots to read and learn!

Midweek Papercraft Party 2

Welcome to our second challenge - it's time for Midweek Papercraft Party #2!

Last week's winner is...

Fantasy Firebird Creations

who used Handmade Harbour's Happy birthday tags on several different birthday cards.  I was actually most impressed by the flowers made from magazine pages - just amazing!

Congratulations Fantasy Firebird! (Sorry I couldn't see you real name on your blog!) Please email wendy@handmadeharbour.co.uk with your choice of three digital stamps from the Handmade Harbour store.

For this second week's challenge, we're still on "Anything Goes" for our theme.  I would LOVE to see more people using Handmade Harbour stamps - you could easily win and don't need to be an experienced card designer to win (although it won't do you any harm if you are!).

What has the design team been up to this week?  Let me show you...

I love the springlike feel in Lynne's new home card!  She made this using the digi stamp of the house sold - a cute house on a hill that comes with its own frame that Lynne has coloured with green and pink to echo the house colours.  The glitter really adds another dimension, doesn't it - although Lynne has added dimension by popping elements of the card - see her blog for more!

Deanne has a cat theme going on...

and not just on her cards!

Smudge looks like a cat who wants some of the action!

Deanne used the cute cat on cushions digi as well as the cat on armchair with patchwork quilts digital stamp.  I love what she's done with these - my favourite is the grey cat on the red and blue cushions.  I suspect Smudge may just not care...

Rachel went straight for the wine!  She made this easel card using the it's always wine o' clock somewhere in the world digistamp

And she's not the only one!  Zoe's choice was white wine!  Aren't they both fab?  I love seeing the same image used in different ways!

And here's a little bit of extra inspiration for you - Zoe also made this yummy card with the free cupcake digital stamp that anyone can currently download.  If you use this in this week's challenge, you will be eligible to win more free stamps (of your choice!)

OK, so maybe we've over-indulged in cake and wine this week.  Well, why not - it's only paper!

Next week's theme is: Smile (or laugh!) - I'm letting you know now so you can prepare!  There are a few humorous digistamps to choose from on Handmade Harbour - I'd love you to use one so you're in with a chance of being next week's winner!

Meanwhile, if you want to join in with this week, please leave your link below.  Looking forward to seeing what you make!

Handmade Monday 131

Welcome to another Handmade Monday.

This Christmas in August lark sure has dragged on!  I'm not complaining, though ... this is another commission for Craftseller magazine.  I needed to make two Christmas cards for them using the free craft papers that they give away with the magazine.

When you are designing using free papers that aren't actually going to be published for a few months yet, they need to email you the papers, which you then of course print before you use them - exactly like using digital stamps and papers, really!

Some commissions are so much fun and this was one of them!  I really enjoyed the process of chopping up paper and sticking it in place (it's kind of relaxing and therapeutic, I think).   I introduced a bit of depth with some of the elements...

In other news, I'm thrilled with how the design team work for Handmade Harbour is coming together.  There's a brand new weekly papercraft challenge started this week - in which I show off the design team's work first, but (a bit like Handmade Monday) anyone is welcome to join in by linking up!

I'm also interviewing the team one by one so you can meet them and find out more.  Lynne and Zoe have been interviewed so far with more to come.  I just love that this team brings together like-minded people from all over the world.  And I love seeing my images becoming a part of someone else's creative project - it's just completely amazing!

I love what Lynne did with my beach huts digi stamp
(this card also makes the perfect antidote to Christmas in August!)

With everything that's been going on in my little corner of the world, I've found it difficult recently to find time to leave comments on all your blogs - it's been quite a juggling act (my third-world-speed internet connection hasn't helped) and I'm sorry - but I always read as many of your blog posts as possible.  I always look forward to seeing what's going on in other creative households!

Over to you for Handmade Monday!

Meet the Design Team: Lynne

Friday is currently my day for getting together with one of the Handmade Harbour design team for a chat - today's interview is with Lynne, who blogs at Scrapbook Lynne and has a new Etsy shop too.  Lynne's enthusiasm is truly inspiring and infectious.  Join me and find out more...

Who are you? Whereabouts in the world are you based?  What's good (and not so good) about your little corner of the world?
Hello!  My name is Lynne Mizera and I am a 51 years-young retired Grandma living my dream life with my husband Dean and our small dog Emma on our little piece of heaven  - four beautiful acres snug up against the Rocky Mountains in Water Valley, Alberta, Canada.

Lynne's home in the winter

Anyone who has met me will tell you I am LOUD, Passionate and LOVE Life!  I love Food in ALL its forms (eating it, cooking it and serving it to people) and I LOVE to Laugh!

Lynne

Although I am a city girl (born in Montreal) I LOVE living in the country.I have travelled all over this beautiful world of ours and this rocky mountain paradise of ours can compete with the BEST this world has to offer with its crisp, clean air, sunshine almost every day of the year and incredible views where the prairies meet the mountains… I wake up every morning and stand on my back deck with my hot cup of coffee to watch the sun rise over the ridge and Pinch myself!  OK… It IS Canada… there IS snow here for at least six months of the year… (grin) but that TOO can be beautiful… AND I have a wood-burning fireplace as well as a furnace!  Oh yeah… and COWBOYS!  There are horses, cows and COWBOYS all around me …. Grin!

Lynne's home in the summer

When and why did you start cardmaking?  What (or who) got you started?
Well no one person really got me started, I have been creative all my life – it’s just IN ME!  When I was nine I sat down and free hand embroidered a spider on a web – just because I needed to (smile). But I discovered the paper arts one day in 2002 when I was cruising my local, small-town craft store and I saw a display of paper, scissors and glue dots – the REST is history!  Scrapbooking is my first passion, but I began making cards to use up some of my leftover scraps and discovered that cardmaking is just scrapping on an itty-bitty canvas that I can GIVE AWAY!!! Now I just USE MY STUFF anyway I feel like – creating backgrounds for photos and sayings.  And lately I seem to put paint and paper on EVERYTHING!

card using a Handmade Harbour's beach huts digi stamp

What do you enjoy most about designing and making a card?

My favorite part of card making is that I get to give it away!  I see cards as mini canvases that allow me to create something special for a specific person or event that makes them want to keep it FOREVER!   One of the greatest compliments I have ever received was discovering that my Mother-in-Law uses all the Christmas cards I have made her over the years to decorate her winter home!

What do you love about digital stamps?
I LOVE digital stamps because they are so versatile AND because they take up NO ROOM in my studio! (grin) I can size them for whatever project I am working on and  I can mix and match and layer them so easily!  I love that I can print as many images as I want at one time using my ink-jet printer and if I heat-set the ink I can color the images using ANYTHING – from Copic markers to watercolor paints to chalks, crayons, pencils, gel pens, inks etc., etc.  My process is always the same… I print at least three of the same image and color them all at the same time.  I have found that for me this takes the pressure off and I don’t worry about “getting it right” the first time.  When I am finished I have lots of images to play with and I usually end up creating more than one card or creating a multi-dimensional card where I cut out and “pop” key pieces of the digital image.

mixed media canvas

How many cards do you make in an average week?

Now THAT is a hard question to answer!  Since I was fortunate enough to be able to retire from office work two years ago I am now living my dream life and I spend a part of every single day creating something in my studio!  I try and finish at least one or two projects per week and I usually have a shoebox full of cards for every occasion.  This year I began offering my cards for sale in a small, local gift shop in Water Valley and they have been FLYING out of the store!  As well as cards and scrapbooking layouts/mini albums, I also have been making tooled leather journal covers and bracelets with empowering sayings on them and small, mixed-media canvases.

Where do you do your crafting?  Do you have a dedicated craft room or do you take over the kitchen table?
I am fortunate enough to have a dedicated space for my crafting that was created for me by my very handy husband for my 42nd birthday.

Lynne's studio

Well, to be honest he was tired of eating on the couch because the table and counters were COVERED two feet deep in STUFF (grin).  He turned an un-usable area at the base of our basement stairs into the most awesome of studios, and I now have about 30 feet of counter space, AMAZING storage above and below AND the cutest little desk under the stairs.  And although I don’t have any natural light my electrician hubby has lit me up so well I don’t even notice.

art desk under the stairs

Do you ever sell the cards you make? If so, where?
YES!  As well as offering my stuff at the local shop in Water Valley, Alberta I have also JUST opened up a tiny Esty shop and I Would LOVE if you came to visit!!!

owls

Do you do other forms of craft too?  If so, what?

Well, as well as all that stuff I referred to in the previous question I also do stained glass mosaics… covering clay plant pots, tables, old trays – my bathroom wall - and just about anything else in bits of stained glass. Right now I am working with some old farm windows – using translucent glue so the light will shine through when you hang them in your window.  I’ll let you know how it goes!

Who are your favorite craft bloggers?

Now THAT is almost impossible to answer (grin) - because I have so many and there is so much talent out there - it is constantly changing… but if you are interested in seeing who I am following right now… please stop by my BLOG!  I Love my Blog and I share EVERYTHING on my blog!  www.scrapbooklynne.blogspot.ca

Finally, have you got a favourite Handmade Harbour image?
ONE?! Just ONE favorite!!  Well How about One Category?!  I especially LOVE LOVE LOVE working with all the by the sea images … although I live right next to the mountains my heart resides by the sea and those Handmade Harbour seaside digital stamps just make me quiver!!!   I cannot find words BIG ENOUGH to express just how excited I am to have discovered Handmade Harbour digital stamps and how eager I am to start playing with these images - I feel like the creative energy is just bursting out of me!

Thanks so much for this little peek into your life and creativity, Lynne.  I love the idea of cards being mini-canvases - a little work of art that people will keep and treasure.  And your home looks stunning.  I'm not sure I could cope with snow for six months of the year (it's lovely but a few weeks of it is more than enough for me!) but that cosy studio looks like it more than makes up for wintry temperatures outside!!

Midweek Papercraft Party 1

Welcome to the first ever Midweek Papercraft Party here on Handmade Harbour!

This is a challenge-type party you can join in, if you enjoy papercrafting. There's more info at the end of the post if you'd like to take part.  Most weeks we'll have a theme, but this week it's Anything Goes - so you have no restrictions at all - you just need to make something using paper!

First up, let's have a look at what some of the design team have been creating!

Mary's made a really pretty card from the birdcage in branches digistamp.  I love the pink and blue colour scheme she's used here - just gorgeous.

Visit Mary at Cr8ive ME

Speaking of colour, this card (below) by kel is another one using a colour mix I love.  The orange and blue with touches of green and red looks so fresh and it's just a brilliant card - simple but very effective!  It's been made using the boy with presents digistamp.

Find out more from kel on her blog: Scraps & photoGRAFFS

I love what Laura's done with colour too (has the design team been reading up on my favourite colours?) The red dotty accent used with blue and white on the cute birdy card (below) is just so me - and the floral background adds a pretty and vintage-style touch. Laura's used the bird with shopping bag digi stamp for her card and a super job she's made of it too!

the bag reads for someone special

Speaking of super, Laura also made this super card (super in so many ways!) using the super hero boy digital stamp

Laura's blog is Crafty Lawyer Creates

OK, so perhaps the superboy card needs a girly project to balance things out?

How pretty is Connie Hall's ballerina scrapbook page?  This is so gorgeously girly and feminine - a very special page for some very special memories!  Connie's used my little ballet dancers digistamp on her page. A fabulous use of the image, I think.

Connie blogs at

Look at the colours in Anita's card (below)!  I love how the contrasts she's used make her colours really pop! Anita's been keeping a secret from me - I'll let you find it out when you pop over to her blog.  It really doesn't matter though - I've seen Anita's work in person, as we often did the same craft fairs in the past. I know everything she makes is of a really high standard as well as being full of colour and zing - just like her card (below) made from the birds and gifts digi stamp, (which actually is 10 stamps in 1 - amazing value, when you think about it!).

If you are inspired to join in this week, here's how it works:

  • You blog about a papercraft project you've made: cards, scrapbooks, wall art - well, anything really.
  • You link up to this blog post using the easy-to-use linky tool below (please be nice and include a link back to Handmade Harbour's blog in your post - or add the Handmade Harbour shop button on your blog). Keep it current - please don't link to old posts.
  • If you use a Handmade Harbour digital stamp, you'll be eligible to win a prize (three free digistamps of your choice from the Handmade Harbour shop).  The design team will be taking turns to choose a winner each week.  It might not always be the slickest, most professionally-executed design which wins but it will be something which appeals to that week's judge in some way... use of colour, usefulness of a tutorial, innovative or different use of materials...etc. - so everyone is in with a chance of winning, even beginners.
  • You can still join in without a Handmade Harbour image, but you won't be eligible for a prize.
  • You can use a Handmade Harbour image without making a purchase - there's a free digistamp you can use.
We'd love to have you take part!  This week's theme is Anything Goes so you don't actually have to stick to a theme at all (but themed challenges are coming up soon!).

Have you been inspired by any of the design team makes?  Have you got a favourite? And are you joining in with the papercraft party this week?  We'd love to see what you've been crafting from paper!

Winners will be announced at next week's Midweek Papercraft Party!  In the meantime...

Handmade Monday 130

Hello and welcome to Handmade Monday!

I've been a bit wrapped up this week with setting everything up for the new Handmade Harbour design team, and now it looks like we are ready to roll with a brand new midweek papercraft challenge.  It will be weekly (every Wednesday), anyone can join in and the design team will be picking a winner every week, who will get a free digi stamp and a winner's blog badge (for bragging rights)!  To be in with a chance of winning, you'll need to use a Handmade Harbour digi stamp (this free digistamp of a cupcake will do!).

I'm hoping it will work in a similar way to Handmade Monday - you'll be able to link up in the same way and visit other bloggers.  It's called the Midweek Papercraft Party and each week there's a theme (although the first couple of weeks, the theme is "Anything Goes" which is kind of not quite a theme!).  If you're into papercraft, you are more than welcome to join in with your latest project!

Meanwhile,  it's still Christmas in August here. I've been working on making a snowglobe for Craftseller magazine and the snow gave me a few problems on this one!  Do you know how hard it is to track down white glitter in August? (Maybe that's a year-round thing, I don't know...) I trailed round art shops, pound shops, stationery shops.  Even my local (very large) Hobbycraft has a very limited supply of the stuff.  I didn't order it online as my deadline was so tight, but I wish I had done - I would have much preferred larger glitter (if you know what I mean) rather than the superfine stuff I bought from Hobbycraft.

the polymer clay cottage for inside the snowglobe

Keeping everything crossed just about worked out this time -  my superfine white glitter kind of looks and acts a bit like snow and - huge bonus!!the parcel arrived safely intact at Craftseller (posting a glass jar full of glittery water and a glued-down polymer clay model somehow seemed to be asking for trouble!).

What has your week been like?

Zoe in the Spotlight! A Design Team Interview...

I wanted to introduce you to the Handmade Harbour design team one by one so I'm interviewing them for this blog!  First up it's Zoe, who blogs at Handmade with Lots of Love

Who are you? Whereabouts in the world are you based?  What's good and bad about your little corner of the world?
I'm Zoe, I live in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. I love it here, roughly in the centre of the country so everywhere is quite accessible.  Bad points - it needs more Craft shops!!

When and why did you start cardmaking?  What (or who) got you started?
I've always been interested in making things and as a little girl you would always find me in the stationery section in shops, rather than the toy section. I would knit with my mum and sew at school. I would make cards on the computer then I started making them from old cards and the rest is history!

What do you enjoy most about designing and making a card?
I like trying new things. I've had a dabble at most card-making techniques. Some I've loved, some not. I like learning new things so I'm always looking out for new ideas and generally 'messing'.

What do you love about digital stamps?
I love digi stamps as there is so much more you can do with them than regular stamps. You can change the size - that's the most important thing for me.

How many cards do you make in an average week?
I make, on average, between 5 and 10 cards a week

Where do you do your crafting?  Do you have a dedicated craft room or do you take over the kitchen table?
I have a craft room, but I craft anywhere. In the dining room, in the bedroom - anywhere really apart from my craft room!!

Do you ever sell the cards you make? If so, where?
I do sell my cards. I send them to the local old people's home. I don't charge much but they love them as they're so different to what you can buy in the shops. I also get quite a few requested cards to make

Do you do other forms of craft too?  If so, what?
I like to knit and sew but I don't do a lot of it these days. I like to make leather bags and purses when I get the chance.

Who are your favourite craft bloggers?
I have a long long list of favourite craft bloggers - way too many to mention

Finally, have you got a favourite Handmade Harbour image?
That's like asking which is your favourite child!!! BUT I love the poppies digi stamp which I used in the card above!

I adore what you did with the Poppies digi stamp, Zoe!  And I'm fast realising that I'm not the only one who spreads their mess creativity all over the house despite having a dedicated space to use!

Announcing the New Design Team!

I'm very excited to announce the first-ever design team for Handmade Harbour.

I was planning a team of just six, but I became overwhelmed by the really high standard of applications, and felt that some of those applicants just could not be turned down!  So I decided to make the team bigger than I'd originally planned.

So, eleven lovely and very creative ladies from around the world have joined together with me to bring you inspiration, cardmaking techniques, scrapbooking ideas, papercrafting tutorials - and lots of fun and colour - using Handmade Harbour's digi stamps.  They'll be creating things like this...

Zoe's poppy card - Zoe blogs at Handmade With Lots of Love

from images like this

I've been amazed by what seems a bit of a magical transformation of my images so far!

How will it work?

Well, next week we are starting a weekly challenge right here on the Handmade Harbour blog.  The design team will be joining in every week (although each DT member will be contributing fortnightly, unless they feel the urge to jump in on their week off!).  If you are into papercrafting, we'd love to have you link up with us - you don't have to be part of the design team and you don't have to have an invitation.  You don't even need to use a Handmade Harbour digi stamp (although there will be a prize up for grabs if you do!).

Watch out for it next week - there will be no real theme for the first couple of weeks (an "anything goes" theme, if you like!) but there are challenge themes on the way!

Meanwhile, would you like to read more about the design team in their own words?  Pop over and have a nosy - from that page you can also visit their blogs and get a flavour of crafting in Canada, Australia and various parts of the United States as well as here in the not-so-sunny-at-the-moment-even-though-it's-summer United Kingdom.

Handmade Monday 129

Hello and welcome to another Handmade Monday!

This week I've been concentrating on getting everything together for Handmade Harbour's brand new and first-ever design team - I'll be introducing the new team on Wednesday if all goes to plan!  I'm rather excited - some of  these ladies have already come up with some lovely inspiring makes from Handmade Harbour digi stamps!

In other news, I completed the sponged Christmas tree project for Craftseller magazine - the finished items (three of them with the same Christmas tree design) are for the kitchen

and I rather like the result but I can't do a big reveal as that's the magazine's privilege, of course.  So I'm sorry but for now all I can offer is a sneak peek...

The plain linen I used came from Guthrie and Ghani (ordered on a Friday at 3.30pm, arrived next morning at 10am!) and if you have a very good memory you may remember I interviewed Lauren when she was first setting up her fabric shop.  She now has a bricks-and-mortar shop as well as her online shop, but she is also well-known for starring in BBC TV's Great British Sewing Bee.  Remember the lovely young blonde Scottish girl who was runner-up?  That's the lovely Lauren.  You can pop over online to Lauren's blog and shop anytime.  Tell her I sent you!

Anyway, how's your week been?  To share what you've been making or doing...

Giveaway and Special Offer!

Over on 1st Unique Gifts, I have a giveaway going on!  I'm giving away a personalised art hanger and it's easy to take part - for your chance to win one of these to hang up your child's mini-masterpieces, just leave a comment on this post on 1st Unique gifts blog.

personalised art hangers for kids
with wooden pegs to hold artwork in place

Meanwhile, the art hangers have a special offer going on too!  You can buy (all different if you like and all personalised) four art hangers for less than the price of three.  The offer and giveaway are UK-only (sorry to my overseas readers - I'll do a giveaway for you soon!).

It's a great way to stock up on children's presents (they make great gifts for your kids' friends) or even Christmas presents (is it too early to say that? I know some people have already started their Christmas shopping!).  Think about grandparents as well as Mums and Dads - personalised art hangers make a lovely little gift from a child they love!  It won't be hard to think of four recipients for these cute masterpiece-holders!

I just thought I'd mention the giveaway and special offer over here too, as I know a lot of Handmade Harbour readers like to encourage their children to make, too.  It's not always all about the grown-ups!

Adding a button to your blog sidebar (and a free digi stamp!)

I think most of my readers will be able to do this already - but I've been asked about how to do it, so I thought it's one of those things that's easy when you know how!  But when you have no idea...well, that's always a bit more difficult, isn't it?

OK, so I've produced a nice shiny new blog badge for my online shop.  If you like Handmade Harbour and are kind enough to want to help spread the word and would like a shiny new badge on your blog (and a free digi stamp) this is what to do (if you already know what to do, just scroll down to find out how to get your free digital stamp):

Handmade Harbour digi stamps

Click on the code box under the blog button above (or the one at the top left of this blog) and scroll down till you've highlighted all the code. Right click and select Copy.

On your blog's main page (the one viewable to the public), click on Design in the top right corner, then Layout.  Or if you are already on the dashboard, just click on Layout.

Depending on the layout of your blog, you probably have a few places showing up saying Add gadget.  One of these will be where you can add your button.  Click on Add gadget.

In the box that pops up, scroll down until you find the one that says HTML/Javascript.  When you click on that, another box comes up.  In the larger of the two boxes showing, paste the code you copied earlier (right click in the box and select Paste).  In the smaller box, you can type a heading if you choose to, such as Buy Digi Stamps, or I love... or you could leave it blank.  But when you have a few of these boxes, it is easier to organise them if they all have a heading!

Click Save.

After you've saved it you'll be back to the Layout screen.  If you choose, you can move around your buttons just by dragging them.  You'll need to click Save Arrangement to finalise it.

Check it's all working fine by clicking on View Blog.

And you're done!

If you need to adjust your blog column widths to accommodate your new badge, just go to Templates then Adjust Widths.

Have you added the Handmade Harbour blog badge to your blog?  Email me to tell me about it (include your blog link): wendy@handmadeharbour.co.uk and I'll send you a digi stamp to say thank you! Please be patient - unlike the stamps you buy, this one will be sent manually.  I'll be as quick as I can though!

Here's a disclaimer in case I get overwhelmed: This free digital stamp offer is a temporary one and may be removed at any time.  It only applies to the Handmade Harbour shop badge and NOT to the Handmade Monday badge.

Handmade Monday 128

Welcome to Handmade Monday.  Pull up a chair, make yourself comfy and join in - you'll find more information about Handmade Monday here.

I had a couple of articles in this month's Craftseller magazine which hit the shops in the UK this week.  This issue has a back-to-school theme... although I think this fabric-covered lunch box might be nice for summer picnics too!  I don't know if you can tell, but this lunchbox has a cute monster on the front - they've called it Monster Munch!

And I made some polymer clay fridge magnets with a "well done at school" kind of theme to them for their 30-minute-make slot.

I also managed to scan and upload some of the first humorous digi stamps I've made.  I'd really like to develop a range of these!  But for now, you can see the first ones on the newly-created humorous digi stamps page.

And I have to make a start on another project for Craftseller this week.  I'm using sponges, paint and a nice linen fabric. And the theme is... (are you sure you're ready for this?) Christmas trees!

And on that note - what have you been doing or making this week?

Humorous Digital Stamps

I promised you some digi stamp designs that were funny.  Funny in the haha sense, not the peculiar sense!

I've started uploading them to the website - and there aren't many of them yet, but I'm hoping to develop this into a whole range.

I think humour, fun and laughter is a big part of life (don't you?) and I'd like to inject a little humour into digital stamp design.  If you'd like to see how far I've got with the fun and laughter, you can pop over to the humorous stamps page on the website.  I hope at least one of them will make you smile!

Tea and a Chat with Abigail Causer of Token Homewares

Today I'm meeting up with Abigail Causer, who's set up a fabulous business using her own very unique designs.  Pull up a chair and join us!

Hello!  Good to see you, the kettle’s just boiled – what would you like to drink?
Tea! I’m a proper Yorkshire tea belly.

So, tell us a bit about yourself and your business.
Well I’m a Yorkshire girl and I’d say by now I’m an adoptive Scouser with a bit of a hybrid accent! I made my home in Liverpool at 17 and just loved it. I started Token Homewares after graduating last year from Liverpool John Moores University with a first Hons Degree in Product Design.

When I started Token it was my desire to create a brand that specialises in making things that people want to keep. I spent my teenage years fixing broken furniture for pocket money, it stuck with me that people keep the things they like and have an attachment to. It occurred to me that this was the way to counteract the throwaway nature of a lot of fashionable homeware products. I never wanted to design and make things that people grew tired of and threw away; it just seemed a bit pointless.

I want Token Homewares to be a brand known for exclusive, high quality products that are distinctive from anything you will find elsewhere. I design timeless pieces, beautifully designed and put together with care to be loved and kept for the long term.

What inspired you to start your creative business? How did it all begin?

I don’t think I ever chose to be a designer it’s just something inside of me that just comes out! I’m not sure quite what, maybe an overactive imagination, but what made me go for “it” and do this as a profession was people’s reactions to my work. As a creative, a lot of the time I would feel a bit like a child with a painting, I was never sure how biased people’s opinions were when they said something was good, but I found exhibiting at New Designers 2012 in London was a feeling of complete vulnerability and I have to say finding that other people enjoyed what I did and actually wanted one was an absolutely fantastic feeling! It filled me with confidence that I had a place to fill in the design world.

How has your business changed and developed since it started?

Well we launched in May this year so it’s not really a long time to gauge over. But in that time the business has come a long way essentially from scratch, it’s great to type in “Token Homewares” into Google and a whole page of links to my company come up where there was nothing before!

What are the main ways you promote your business?  Which methods have been the most successful for you?

I spend a lot of time onTwitter. But not just self promoting the whole time, I enjoy reading about and meeting new people, it’s a great way to find people who enjoy the same things and a fantastic way to collaborate. It really makes so many more avenues accessible in a way that’s never really been there before, with this interview for example! I never would have had the chance to talk to you lovely people about my passion if it weren’t for Twitter!

What’s your workspace like?  Can we have a sneak peek?  And do you have any workspace organisation tips for the rest of us?

I try to not work in the same place every day, especially if you’re at home, after a while home starts to feel like work and there’s no escape! I love the days when I’m out in the laser studio, cutting my designs. I have a home office/studio which I only really use for assembling my lampshades and storing things. The rest of the time I like to be out and about, if I have a set task to do I tend to take my laptop and sit in a cafe with a cuppa, it’s great for people watching too. As for organisational tips I’m not the best to ask, my whole world is organised chaos!

What are the best and worst bits of running your business?

The worst thing is the uncertainty, you don’t have a regular schedule and the money worries and isolation can really take over you if you’re not careful. The absolute best thing is doing something I love, even though there’s some days I think “why did I do this to myself” the thing that keeps me going is that this is an investment in my future and it’s all worthwhile, and I can see it developing into something brilliant!

What other small (or not-so-small) creative businesses do you admire?

I’m all for UK business, I’m so happy that more and more business is coming from right here in the UK, it’s the way we’re going to pull out of the recession and have a healthier economy. I really admire Liberty London; they’re such a British legacy! Their message is always so consistent and their products are always beautiful pieces of craft.

What tips can you give to others who run (or hope to run) a small creative business?

Well if you’re already running or considering starting a business, you’ve obviously already got a clear vision of what it is that you’re going to do with an “end goal” in sight, that’s really important. Secondly don’t underestimate the importance of creating a buzz about what you do, that’s half the mountain.

So you’ve designed and developed a product, set up your business, got your funding, learned the financial and legal stuff, sorted copyright, testing, photography, packaging etc and then you have a beautiful product. People don’t just find you. With publicity comes branding, self-promotion, web design and SEO optimizing, contacting stockists, and then there’s PR and press releases.

I’d say having a mentor to talk you through this is absolutely fundamental, even if it’s just to vent to and talk you back off the ledge once in a while. I’m really lucky that I have two! I have a mentor with LJMU and with the St Helens chamber of commerce and having their support (and contacts) makes all the difference. Before I started my business I was pretty naive, I was just a girl who liked making things! But I have to say starting my own business has been the biggest and most rewarding learning curve of my life.

What are your hopes, plans or ambitions for the future?
I see Token Homewares as a lifelong mission for myself, and who knows where it could go, but it’s important to me that the brand retains its personality throughout. In the near future I see us working on commercial projects; our lighting is perfect to be shown off in hotels, cafes and trendy bars, that’s the dream! Personally I want to go back to University and do a masters, I feel that as a director of a company it’s so important to have a clear vision and the way to do that is to be the most informed practising designer possible, so for me education is the way forward!

Finally, where are the places we can find you online if we want to partake in a little friendly cyber stalking?
